There are different types of income based housing
- Public Housing (Usually through a housing authority) here’s a state by state list of housing authorities. https://www.hud.gov/contactus/public-housing-contacts
- Section 8 HUD Project Based Apartments. No these are not always in bad neighborhoods. These are apartments that are income based and are usually run by thru private landlords or non profits. They are usually geared towards specific populations like elderly and disabled or for families. These have own separate wait lists and you can usually find them using the HUD map and search for affordable housing.
- Housing 811 program for people with developmental disabilities or mental health conditions
- Low Income Tax credit Based Housing
